Ariarca Otero bestämmer sig för att öppna en låda med minnen och återskapa historien om sin gammelmorbror, poeten Javier Heraud (1942-1963) som 21 år gammal sköts till döds vid floden Madre de Dios. Genom Ariarcas ögon, som också är 21 år, lär vi känna poetens liv och verk på nära håll. I lådan med minnen upptäcker Ariarca en historia som hon inte kände till. Poesi och brev skildrar Herauds resor till Paris, Moskva, Madrid och Havanna, hans medverkan i en gerillagrupp som lyckades ta sig in i Peru genom Bolivias djungel och kapituleringen som ändå ledde till att han mördades, för att på så sätt bli den evigt unga poeten. Även kallad den peruanska poesins Rimbaud och en av de mest värdefulla rösterna i Perus poetiska landskap.
